RICK ROWBOTTOM (Australia)

INTRODUCTION TO PLAITING

Plaiting - Rick Rowbottom ONE-DAY WORKSHOP (MONDAY). MATERIAL COST $5.00

This project is a great introduction on how to prepare Kangaroo leather for plaiting; you will learn the basic techniques of plaiting in the round including knots.

The workshop will cover a basic four strand plait starting flat and progress into round, then making round plaited cords finishing with leather gum nuts. The centres are bound together then decorated with a pineapple knot or small Turks head knots on either end, including coach whipping (binding).

These techniques can be used for many other projects including jewellery, bracelets, hat bands etc.

This workshop will provide you with the basic skills needed for the following workshops to be presented by Rick.

Plaited Jewellery - Rick Rowbottom

KANGAROO LEATHER JEWELLERY

TWO-DAY WORKSHOP (TUES/WED). MATERIAL COST $30.00

Leather Necklace and Bracelet enhanced with Pearls and Crystals. This project is made using 6 strands of Kangaroo leather lace, which includes plaiting over a cotton cord filler other special techniques, will include how to start and finish.

The plaited cords are decorated with Turks head knots, if you are of the adventurous nature you can add a foundation under each of the knots to give the appearance of Turks head knots raised and rounded to simulate a bead.

A Pineapple knot can also be used as another form of decoration using a contrasting colour instead of the basic Turks head knots.

Fresh water Pearls and Swarovski Crystals are the feature of this beautiful neckpiece and bracelet.

RIDING CROP

Riding Crop - Rick Rowbottom TWO-DAY WORKSHOP (THURS/FRI). MATERIAL COST $55.00

The techniques learned from the previous workshops will provide you with the skills for this project.

This workshop introduces working with twelve strands in two contrasting colours of Kangaroo leather to make a presentation riding crop. A feature of this riding crop will be a German silver collar on the handle.

In this class the emphasis will be on introducing numerous patterns; you will also learn different techniques of how to change from one pattern to the next.

This workshop includes a finely plaited six-strand wrist strap, finished with Turks head knots to cover the binding. Rick will also demonstrate how to cut out the cover and make the foundation. On completion of these workshops you will have gained sufficient knowledge to finesse your plaiting.
