HAND SEWING & TOOL CARE - DINNER HOBBLES / BELT

Dinner Hobbles - Belt - John Shortt ONE-DAY WORKSHOP (MONDAY). MATERIAL COST $40.00


Subjects covered during the workshops will include:
How to examine leather for faults and how to differentiate between good and bad leather.

The structure and divisions of hide and the function of differ-ent types of leather - bridle butts, harness backs, shoulders, panel-hides.

Preparation of leather for stitching - cutting, edging, staining, polishing, creasing, marking-out. Using and adapting to stitching clams. Double hand and backstitching methods.

Knowledge of hand-tools and equipment, needles and threads. Care, adjustment and sharpening of traditional hand cutting tools. Safety techniques.

Barcoo Bridal - John Shortt

BARCOO BRIDLE AND BREAST PLATE

TWO-DAY WORKSHOP (TUES/WED). MATERIAL COST $200.00


The Barcoo Bridle and Stockman Breastplate are the most popular.

Students should be able to hand–stitch, but not necessarily with speed. The emphasis is on quality work.

Learn how to measure and prepare a pattern for a Barcoo Bridle and Stockman Breastplate. You will learn the correct procedure for preparing the leather cutting, edging, staining, polishing, creasing, marking-out stitching.

Cutting straps from a side or single or double butt of leather, how to prepare the straps, edge bevelling edge finishing, attaching buckles and other components. These items are all hand sewn.

SADDLE BAG WITH WELT

Saddle Bag - John Shortt TWO-DAY WORKSHOP (THURS/FRI). MATERIAL COST $110.00


The saddle bag size is approx 11" x 8" and will include instruction to prepare and hand sew in a welt. This technique can then be incorporated in many other projects, examples are handbags, purses etc.

This workshop is for the more advanced student, if you attend the previous two workshops on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday then you will be able to cope with the skills required to advance to this level.Or, if you are skilled in hand sewing and not attended the previous two workshops, then you will be able to enrol.

John will advise you on the preferred leather for this project and how to prepare the leather for marking-out patterns. The workshop will then cover edging, creasing, staining, burnishing polishing, attaching buckles and other components. Buckles used in this workshop are stainless steel not brass as shown in the image.

This technique can then be used in many other leather projects, examples are small purse, handbags etc.
