Inlays & Outlays - Colin Jorgensen

Inlays and Onlays are used by Bookbinders in decorating the covers of books with similar materials in order to maintain a smooth or near smooth cover that will not be damaged by the movement of the book to and from the bookshelf.

In this workshop techniques used by Bookbinders will be used in creating Inlays and Onlays in leather. Different coloured leathers will be used to create an image. Inlays and Onlays can be used in "leather Painting" to create pictures totally in leather. This workshop will deal with simple designs so as the students may later improve their skills to construct more complex pictures /designs.

All leathers, pastes and other materials will be provided in the kit. Before Inlay and Onlays work begins. Colin will instruct the participants how to ensure that the tools used in these procedures are sharp and how to keep them sharp.

Colin Jorgensen has been bookbinding for seventeen years. He has been a member of the Queensland Bookbinders’ Guild since 2004 and at present is Vice President and a Tutor in the Guild. Colin also teaches for other Craft Groups. His main work is in book repair/restoration which he manages from his home. The repair/restoration covers all types of book structures.
