BOB PARK (USA)

FINGER CARVING

Bobby Park - Finger Carving

ONE-DAY WORKSHOP (SUNDAY).

MATERIAL COST $25.00

Undoubtedly difficult to master, the swivel knife is the most important tool we employ. Its use is the foundation for every style and type of leather carving. With that in mind, we are presenting a one day workshop for all skill levels which is dedicated completely to the attributes of the swivel knife and swivel knife techniques.

This instruction will cover everything from basic knife fundamentals to specialty knives and their specific uses. The discussion will include: proper hand fit/grip, blade selection, sharpening/stropping, various knife manufacturers as well as tracing patterns and tooling leather.

Bobby will demonstrate the techniques that he uses when cutting tooling patterns, performing finish cuts and creating ”freehand” Finger Carvings. Students will learn the fundamentals of basic cutting, cutting sequences, line priority and practice techniques. In the afternoon session students will have the opportunity to practice cutting one of Bobby's Finger Carving patterns.

As this is not a project class, there will be no emphasis or pressure to complete a pattern. The focus will be strictly on evaluating each student's skill level and tailoring comments to help them improve.

CREATING WESTERN FLORAL DESIGNS

Bob Park - Western Floral Designs

TWO-DAY WORKSHOP (MONDAY/TUESDAY).

MATERIAL COST $25.00

This workshop is designed as an introduction to drawing floral tooling patterns utilising the techniques outlined in Bobby's book. Thus “Creating Western Floral Designs” will serve as the textbook for the workshop.

While the novice tooler is welcome to participate, intermediate and advanced artisans who have developed command of their tools will benefit the most in this workshop. The instruction is designed to assist those who struggle when composing floral tooling patterns. Bobby outlines the step by step process that he uses to design patterns which is applicable to nearly all tooling styles.

The workshop is not an art class. Rather, it is a mechanical approach to creating compositions utilising the traditional design elements typically found in most tooling patterns.

Topics of discussion will include: creating layout/design templates, the application of templates in designs, pattern boundary considerations, understanding pattern flow, creating design balance and prioritising the use of design elements.

Bob Park - Edge Burnishing

DYEING, ANTIQUING & BURNISHING

Topics will include leather quality, preparing the leather for colour, the various types of dyes, applying oil, including Fiebings Antique Paste and final finish coats. Throughout the process he will discuss the tools and methods required for each application.

In the afternoon session Bobby will demonstrate the burnishing techniques he prefers to produce professional looking edges. Instruction will cover such subjects as: utilising/maintaining edging tools, hand burnishing, mechanical burnishing, utilisation of various burnishing solutions and the method he uses for dyeing and finishing edges. Additionally, he will demonstrate his techniques for finishing edges on exotic chrome tanned leathers.

Brilliant workshop to attend to finesse your work.

ADVANCED WESTERN FLORAL TOOLING

Bob Park - Advanced tooling

TWO DAY WORKSHOP (FRIDAY/SATURDAY).

MATERIAL COST $25.00

There is a lot of reference material on floral tooling basics, but little attention to advanced skills. This workshop is designed to introduce advanced techniques to the intermediate and advanced tooler. In general, topics will include casing leather, use of carving solutions, swivel knife and stamping tool selection.

Using a power point presentation, Bobby will introduce a variety of the techniques that he employs on his own projects such as cutting sequences, tooling sequences, undercutting and petal lifting, back-beveling, matting and the use of modeling tools. Aditionally he will discuss the importance of creating texture and highlights in consideration of the final finishes to be used.

The class will have an opportunity to apply these techniques on one of Bobby's floral tooling patterns. Finally, the class will apply color utilising spirit dyes, acrylics and paste antique as well as a final finish.

Throughout the workshop, Bobby will tailor comments to students individually, to help them to advance their skills.
