MICHELLE VANDERMEER (AUSTRALIA)

LEATHER-BOUND JOURNAL (CROSS STRUCTURE BINDING)

Michelle Vandermeer - Book Binding

ONE DAY WORKSHOP (SUNDAY).

MATERIAL COST $45.00

Learn how to make a classic leather-bound journal, with your choice of papers inside, handsewn using a traditional binding technique known as "Cross Structure".

In this workshop all materials are provided, and you can choose from a variety of coloured/upcycled leathers, an assortment of different papers for the book’s pages, and a colourful range of waxed-linen bookbinding thread, all coming together to make a unique and personalised soft-cover journal.

Cross structure binding has been around since medieval times, and is distinguished by sections of pages sewn onto the leather 'fingers' of the covers, either leaving the colorful stitching exposed or concealing it behind the spine panel of leather (both styles are taught in this class - your choice of which you'd prefer to make). Front and back covers can also feature mix and matched colors or even different leather types.

Ideal for complete beginners, as well as those who would like to expand their range of bookbinding techniques. You'll be able to examine finished examples of a variety of cross structure leather-bound books and draw inspiration from the variations and possibilities.

All tools and materials are provided as part of the workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own items from home (i.e. A3 cutting mat, a metal ruler, craft/Stanley knife, pencil, awl, bonefolder, and any sheets of fancy/coloured/found papers if you want to use these in your book) Comprehensive instructions and templates are also included, to enable you to continue making more books at home.

JAPANESE STAB BOUND BOOK

Michelle Vandermeer - Japanese Stab Binding

ONE DAY WORKSHOP (WEDNESDAY).

MATERIAL COST $45.00

Learn a variety of Japanese stab bindings, by making at least FIVE different leather covered notebooks using the most widely recognised Oriental bindings: Traditional 4-hole; Noble; Tortoiseshell; Hemp-leaf stitching patterns; and an elegant bound stick binding. We’ll explore how to create the many different Japanese stab-bound books with a variety of threads, leather thonging, and silk ribbon.

This is a great workshop for beginner bookbinders and is also exciting for those who already have experience with western bookbinding because it offers a new set of decorative opportunities. Japanese stab bindings are also an easy and practical way to bind single loose sheets, which is difficult in western book structures.

All materials are provided in the workshop, and you can choose from an assortment of different leather types/textures, papers/card, a colourful range of waxed-linen thread, and also a variety of Japanese Chiyogami papers to make a set of unique and personalised books.

All tools and materials are provided as part of the workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own items from home (i.e. A3 cutting mat, a metal ruler, craft/Stanley knife, pencil, awl, bonefolder, and any sheets of fancy/coloured/found papers if you want to use these in your books) Comprehensive instructions and templates are also included, to enable you to continue making more books at home.

LONGSTITCH & CRISS-CROSS LONGSTITCH JOURNALS

Michelle Vandermeer - Book binding

TWO DAY WORKSHOP (FRIDAY/SATURDAY).

MATERIAL COST $90.00

DAY 1: LONGSTITCH HARDCOVER BOOK

Learn how to make a useful and practical journal with a soft-leather spine and two hardboard covers, hand-stitched using coloured thread and a beautiful Longstitch binding technique.

Your book's hard covers can be created from 'found things' such as vintage hardcover novels, cigar box lids, or boards wrapped with interesting papers (such as designer wallpaper, fabric, handmade papers) or even fine kangaroo leather. Bring your own hardcover 'found thing' or use something from the variety supplied.

DAY 2: CRISS-CROSS LONGSTITCH SOFTCOVER BOOK

Make yourself the perfect A5-sized sketchbook or journal, created with buttery-soft leather covers, your choice of papers inside, and hand-stitched with coloured thread using a fancy criss-cross longstitch binding technique.

The books we make in this workshop are approximately A5 in size and can include an optional elastic closure and/or bookcloth or paper lining to the inside of the leather.

Bring along your own mix of creative papers (drawing or watercolour paper, coloured or patterned papers, etc) or use something interesting from the variety supplied. Your personal selection of leather, papers, coloured thread, and decorative stitching pattern will be sure to create a very individual and unique book, just how you like it.

All materials are provided in the workshop, and you can choose from a selection of coloured leathers, an assortment of different papers for the book’s pages, and a colourful range of waxed-linen threads to make the two unique and personalised Longstitched journals.

Ideal for complete beginners, as well as those who would like to expand their range of bookbinding techniques. You'll be able to examine finished examples of a variety of Longstitched books (both hardcover and soft leather covered) and draw inspiration from the variations and possibilities.

All tools and materials are provided as part of the workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own items from home (i.e. A3 cutting mat, a metal ruler, craft/Stanley knife, pencil, awl, bonefolder, and any sheets of fancy/coloured/found papers you'd like to use in the creation of your book). Comprehensive instructions and templates are also included, to enable you to continue making more books at home.
