PLAITED LEATHER NECKLACE

Leather necklace - Rick Rowbottom

ONE-DAY WORKSHOP (Sunday).

MATERIAL COST $25.00

This workshop is a great introduction on learning the basics of leather plaiting using Kangaroo Leather.

You will learn the steps on how to make a stunning Kangaroo leather necklace featuring three freshwater pearls.

The workshop covers basic plaiting techniques. Working with pre-cut stretched and bevelled 4mm Kangaroo lace, you will learn how to prepare strands, including stretching, bevelling and skiving.

The workshop covers how to plait with four strands over a premade 3mm leather core, using the under one and over one technique of plaiting in the round.

A feature of this neck piece is the three freshwater pearls that adorn the centre, which gives this project a classy modern look, the stranding is finished off with a magnetic clasp.

RED HIDE STOCKWHIP

TWO DAY WORKSHOP (Monday/Tuesday).

MATERIAL COST $70.00

In this workshop you will learn to make a red hide stockwhip with a half plait kangaroo hide handle.

Using 4 strands, you will plait over tapered pieces of leather to make the thong. Then plait an 8-strand half handle and finish off with a Turks head cover knot and a second knot over a foundation to form a knob on the end.

MINIATURE STOCKWHIP HATBAND

ONE DAY WORKSHOP (Wednesday).

MATERIAL COST $20.00

In this workshop, you will learn to create a miniature stock whip hatband, using traditional techniques, that will add a touch of class to your favourite Akubra hat.

You will plait a miniature thong, using 4 strands of leather, over a leather core, using the same techniques used to plait a full-size whip, you will also plait the handle over a solid core, adding a second colour, to finesse your work.

A keeper will be bound on the top end of the handle and you will add a Turks head to the other end to complete the project.

Kangaroo Leather is one of the strongest leathers available, its unique structure allow plaiters to cut thin strands, while retaining its strength.

PLAITING IN THE ROUND

Rick Rowbottom - Plaiting in the round

TWO DAY WORKSHOP (Friday/Saturday).

MATERIAL COST $50.00

Expand your knowledge if you are interested in learning the tips and tricks of intricate round plaiting using two contrasting colours of Kangaroo leather.

In this workshop, you will learn the techniques to complete a round plaited project. You will be shown how to prepare your lace using different techniques, including, cutting, stretching, resizing thicknessing and skiving.

You will learn how to plait over a solid core, starting from a simple plait to using other different plaiting patterns. Some of the patterns are:

  • Birds Eyes
  • Checker boards
  • Solid bands
  • Herring bone
  • Sennit
  • Double diamond
  • Triple diamonds, just to name a few.

You will also learn how to make foundations for Turks head knots and how to tie Turks head knots to add that special touch of finesse to your finished project.

The techniques covered in this workshop, will provide you with many different plaiting in the round patterns that can be used in a variety of projects examples are: Necklace, Bracelets, Key Rings, Whips, Riding Crops, Dog Leads and much more ... let your imagination be creative!
