CARD WALLET

Martin Carswell - Card Wallet

ONE DAY WORKSHOP (SUNDAY & WEDNESDAY).

MATERIAL COST $45.00

Beginners Level Workshop.

This project, while seemingly simple, will actually be a great way to learn some of the fundamental techniques of fine leathercraft. It will feature a strong focus on neat stitching, burnished edges, and some more technical techniques like skiving will also be taught.

No prior leatherworking experience is necessary, but even intermediate leatherworkers will benefit from this class by focusing on the fundamentals done right. Saddle stitching, edge creasing, correct stitch placement, step and tapered skiving, efficient glue technique and edge burnishing will be covered, among many other small techniques.

Only tools not required in this class compared to the intermediate is the bone folder and awl.

If students have no experience, we can skip the skiving and edge creasing, which cuts out the stitch groover, French edger, skiving knife, edge creaser, leaving more time to focus on the basics like stitching.

GUSSETTED CARD WALLET

Martin Carswell - Wallet

TWO DAY WORKSHOP (MONDAY/TUESDAY & FRIDAY/SATURDAY).

MATERIAL COST $70.00

Intermediate Level Workshop.

This is a great project to learn how to start moving into three dimensional wallets, with skills that will translate into other work like bag making. The other main focus of this project will be awl stitching, an essential skill that is being neglected as modern pricking irons take over most of the work.

We will be making a single gusseted card wallet, with your choice of a single piece or three-piece gusset. It will have multiple additional card slots, a padded section on the flap for decoration, and turned edges on the card slots. It will also be lined under the flap. The edges will be burnished to a high gloss.

This project will suit an intermediate leatherworker who has already made wallets but wants to approach more three-dimensional projects and practice awl stitching. There will be a strong focus on hand skills, such as skiving. Turned edges will be used on some of the card slots and the gussets. Using these gusset construction methods, you will be able to approach bags and larger items with confidence.

Some skills I would like you to have practiced before attending the class are:

  • Hand skiving with a Japanese skiving knife, paring knife or French edger.
  • Saddle stitching experience is beneficial, but I will cover the correct technique for those who need a refresher.
